Beware Conficker Worm come on April Fool’s Day! No Joke!

March 31, 2009

In an event that hits the computer world only once every few years, security experts are racing against time to mitigate the impact of a bit of malware which is set to wreak havoc on a hard-coded date. As is often the case, that date is April 1.

Malware creators love to target April Fool’s Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we’ve seen in years.

Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent… though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.

Thanks in part to a quarter-million-dollar bounty on the head of the writer of the worm, offered by Microsoft, security researchers are aggressively digging into the worm’s code as they attempt to engineer a cure or find the writer before the deadline. What’s known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything’s possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.

Conficker is clever in the way it hides its tracks because it uses an enormous number of URLs to communicate with HQ. The first version of Conficker used just 250 addresses each day — which security researchers and ICANN simply bought and/or disabled — but Conficker C will up the ante to 50,000 addresses a day when it goes active, a number which simply can’t be tracked and disabled by hand.

At this point, you should be extra vigilant about protecting your PC: Patch Windows completely through Windows Update and update your anti-malware software as well. Make sure your antivirus software is actually running too, as Conficker may have disabled it.

Microsoft also offers a free online safety scan here, which should be able to detect all Conficker versions.

How to Avoid April 1 Virus?

March 31, 2009

Trying to avoid the April 1 virus that continues to evolve and spread throughout the internet? If not, you should be. The computer virus, also known as Conflicker C, is a sophisticated program that can easily infect your computer without detection and render it almost entirely nonfunctional. Learn about this widespread and dangerous virus before you get infected.

AWARENESS: WHAT IS THE APRIL 1 VIRUS?

The April 1 virus has been around for three years in various forms and has been transmitted under a variety of names. In the past, these names have included ‘Downup’ and ‘Kido’ among others. This year, the virus is spread under the known names ‘April 1’ and ‘Conflicker C’. However, the virus could be spread under any name.

The intention of this virus is to create a network of computers that function primarily in response to a remote ‘master’ computer. Essentially, your computer may not function, or may be largely disabled, unless acting on the command of the master. In either case, infection can take place at any time and spread to other computers undetected.

The virus is able to spread undetected because it lays dormant for so long. The worm, or virus, has been spreading for months, but is not scheduled to become active until April 1, 2009. This is the date the virus has come to life in previous years as well.

AVOID INFECTION

The April 1 virus is spread through malicious websites, but also through familiar and trusted websites. It is commonly spread through peer-to-peer file sharing programs and through email attachments. In fact, there are new methods of transmission discovered regularly.

Malicious sites can be easy to spot. These sites often put your computer into an endless cycle of pop-up windows and attempted downloads. If you are working with Microsoft Vista, all file downloads require your authorization (unless you have unwisely disabled this feature). In this situation, it is easy to know that you did not initiate a download and that the action should be cancelled. Unfortunately, not all file transfers are so transparent.

In general, you should not download or open email attachments that are not from a known safe site. Even when scanned with your anti-virus program, the file will likely show up as clean. You may know the sender well, but if the sender is infected they won’t know until after the virus becomes active.

It is strongly recommended that peer-to-peer file sharing users stop downloading. Again, the virus is all but undetectable and even a virus scan will not expose infected files.

APRIL 1 VIRUS AND YOUTUBE USERS

YouTube users are particularly vulnerable to infection. Users have been infected when prompted to upgrade Flash player. If you have been watching videos on YT without issue and are suddenly prompted to download an upgrade, you should refuse. This has been a means of spreading the virus.

Once you have refused the download, you can verify that it was malicious by attempting to view other videos. If you are able to view other clips without being prompted to upgrade, it was likely an attempt to spread the Conflicker C virus to your computer.

If you continue to be prompted to upgrade, this still does not mean the prompts aren’t viral. Contact YT support and ask about the prompts you are receiving. This is a major issue for YT and they will help you determine if you actually need to upgrade. If they determine an upgrade is not necessary, your contact will help them track the internal sources of the virus.

Mukesh Ambani is Now The Richest Person in The World!

March 31, 2009

A few months back, Carlos Slim Helu overtook Bill Gates as World’s Richest Man and now news is breaking in that Mukesh Ambani is the richest person in the world!

A trusted business news resource, The Business Standard reports that billionaire Mukesh Ambani today became the richest person in the world, surpassing Carlos Slim Helu, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett due to a strong bull run in the Indian stock markets that led to a share price rally on his group companies (Reliance Industries, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure) and boosted his net worth to $63.2 billion.

They compare the 5 most richest persons the world by net worth
1. Mukesh Ambani ($63.2 billion)
2. Carlos Slim Helu ($62.2993 billion)
3. William (Bill) Gates ($62.29 billion)

One year back, Mukesh Ambani has topped Azim Premji of Wipro as the richest Indian. I guess the Forbes lists will start changing again…

The Indian stock market has witnessed a strong bull run in the past few months with top blue chip stocks scaling new highs. Today the BSE Sensex crossed the 20000-mark at end of the trading session and it took a mere 11 trading sessions from 19000 to 20000 points. Today the Bombay Stock Exchange’s benchmark touched a life high of 20,024.87, up 780 points or 3.9 per cent from previous close while the National Stock Exchange’s Nifty was up 199 points or 3.49 per cent at 5901.

How do millionaires spend their money? They go to the Millionaire Fairs, buy luxury laptops, get premium email service, gift million dollar bills, drive big cars, donate to charity, stay in the best hotels and even get famous in second life.

The 2009 NBA MVP Candidates, Who Will Win?

March 31, 2009

In 2008, the MVP race is not as obvious as it was in 2009.  Kobe won the MVP last season leading his Lakers to the NBA finals, and no one complained because it was well deserved.  This season the debate will be much more intense.

Here is a rundown of the 2009 MVP Candidates:

  • LeBron James-(pictured above)

· Four Triple Doubles in March

· Cavaliers currently have the best record in the NBA

· #2 in points per game (28.6)

· 7.6 rebounds per game

· #10 in assists per game (7.3)

· #6 in steals per game (1.8)

· 1.3 blocks per game

· Only 1 home loss this season

  • Kobe Bryant

#3 in points per game (27.7)
#1 record in the Western Conference

·

  • Dwayne Wade

· #1 in points per game (29.9)

· 1.4 blocks per game

· #2 in steals per game (2.3)

· #9 in assists per game (7.6)

  • Dwight Howard

· #1 in rebounds per game (14)

· #1 in blocks per game (3)

· 21 points per game

  • Chris Paul

· #1 in Steals per game (2.8)

· #1 in assists per game (11)

· 22 points per game

– What is your definition of MVP?

– Can your MVP be on a losing team?

– If the Cavaliers finish the 2009 season with the best record in the NBA does anyone stand a chance to LeBron James?

How to make a boneless bangus

    March 18, 2009

    Making A Boneless Bangus

I’m just wondering why so many people don’t know how to make boneless bangus on their own.

Actually, you reverse engineer the process by just mere inspecting the final product. Anyways, for those who want a step-by-step procedure to debone the milkfish (Bangus), here it is:
Raw Materials: Fresh bangus (preferably 3 pieces to a kilo)
    Equipments:
    Mosquito forceps, straight
    Cutting board
    Sharp knife
    Utility tray
    Basin
    Pre-Preparation
    1. Washing. Wash fish upon arrival from the market. Scales may or may not removed.
    2. Splitting. Split fish on the dorsal side starting from the tail to the head by running the edge of the knife along the backbone.

    3. Removal of internal organs. Lay fish open like butterfly fillet. Remove gills and internal organs. Wash fish to remove blood and dirt. The black membrane covering the belly cavity may or may not be removed depending upon the consumers choice. Wash fish in running water.

    4. Removal of backbone dorsal fin. Remove backbone by laying fish flat on the cutting board with the skin down. Hold the knife in a horizontal/slanting position and cut in with the tip of the blade along the backbone from the head to tail. Trim off the dorsal fin.

    Deboning Proper
It is important to know the exact location of the spines most especially the the intermascular spines.

Total number of spines 196-208(don’t be silly. don’t count the spines. I just put it for illustration purposes:-). Place fish in the shallow tray. With the end of the mosquito forceps, start removing the spines.

    1. Rib bones. The bones are located in the belly cavity. They are visible and superficially embedded thus easy to pull out.

    2. Dorsal intermascular spines. Make a superficial slit from head to tail along the dent of the dorsal muscle. Pull out the embedded intermascular spines one at a time. The spines on the head portion are branched spines while the rest are unbranched. The spines on the tail portion are very much attached to the muscle tendon, making it difficult to remove. It is necessary to make a horizontal slit on this portion for easier removal of these spines.

    3. Lateral intermascular spines. Area located in-between the dorsal and ventral muscles. Pull out first the large arch-shaped spines at the base of the operculum. Proceed puling out the Y-shaped spines up the mid-portion of the body ending with 3 single delicate spines.

    4. Ventral intermascular spines. Make a shallow slit along the dent between the muscle segments of the ventral side and mid-portion of the body to the tip of the muscle in the tail. Pull out the first 2 very fine and delicate spines found in the mid-body which is the start of the spines located in this portion. Proceed to the tail region.

After the deboning, you can start marinating the deboned bangus. In my case, I usually put vinegar, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Put it in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours then fry your own homemade boneless bangus. Serve with white rice or fried rice. Good for breakfast with minced tomatoes.
